Dr Maurizio Santoro presenting results from early BIOMASS satellite data.
The use of BIOMASS data sparked a lively discussion in Ljubljana, Slovenia
As part of the NextGenCarbon project and the European Space Agency - ESA's CCI Biomass project, our colleague Maurizio Santoro from GAMMA Remote Sensing AG presented results from early BIOMASS satellite data at the PolInSAR-BIOMASS Workshop 2026 this week. The workshop in Ljubljana, Slovenia, created a vibrant platform for scientific exchange, highlighting the latest developments in, among others, fully polarimetric airborne and spaceborne systems, and driving recommendations for next-generation algorithms and products.
On a workshop, one of the objectives was to review preparatory activities on the integration of BIOMASS in carbon modelling and policy activities. Maurizio Santoro's presentation "Assessment of early BIOMASS data in the context of global biomass estimation," sparked lively interest and discussion among attendees.
"Already at this stage, BIOMASS data seem to be well suited to complement GAMMA’s approach to estimate aboveground biomass (AGB). The talk was well received and stimulated discussion on the future use of the data", says Maurizio.
