NEWS AND EVENTS / SEPTEMBER 2025
Mon 8 September 2025, NGC Communication Team
The first annual meeting of the NextGenCarbon project took place in sunny Paris on10-12 June. Over 50 climate scientists from 21 partners across Europe gathered at the meeting to discuss and listen to presentations on a variety of topics within the project, ranging from earth observation and machine learning to modelling and communication. Everyone had the same goal: make plans and align their work to improve our understanding of the European GHG budget.
During the first two days, closer attention was paid to the work packages in the various areas of expertise within the project. The project's impact assurance, task forces and social media presence were also discussed. The Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, located in the heart of Paris, was an ideal venue for enjoying the French atmosphere during the meeting. A great way to end the day was to take a stroll along the Seine and enjoy good food and conversation. On the last day, the meeting concluded, and it was time to head home.
- Overall - our first meeting was great. The location in the centre of Paris was beautiful, the staff at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris were helpful and friendly, and despite the technical difficulties that always occur at large events, people were in a good mood - probably because there was plenty of sunshine outside the conference room, reflects professor Ruben Valbuena, coordinator of NextGenCarbon.
It's crucial that people have a chance to meet and discuss their points of view, especially at the beginning of the project.
-It takes a lot of effort to plan meetings like this, but it's crucial that people have a chance to meet and discuss their points of view, especially at the beginning of the project. These meetings emphasise the importance of the topic and demonstrate our wide range of expertise and how people can contribute to the project in the best possible way”, he continues.
